When a great idea becomes real

Outrigger Connection began to manufacture the Outrigger Canoes in 1991. Since then many OC designs became legendary and were industry leaders in new concepts and winners in the races.
Outrigger Connection designs were always on the cutting edge design wise and with the technology used in construction.
OC was first to construct lightweight canoes using aerospace technologies like vacuum bagging and advanced composites like Kevlar, fibre-glass, graphite and epoxy resins.
In the never ending pursuit of improvements and after 60 plus 3 piece Mirage OC-6 canoes built in Europe, Outrigger Connection Europe announces it is now manufacturing canoes with the latest environmentally friendly infusion technology. This results in better resin to fiber ratio and a more compact laminate, making the canoe even stiffer and stronger.
The three piece Mirage OC-6 is extremely easy to transport and put together, requiring no special skills and just a ratchet to connect the pieces.

History of original OC-4 design

In the summer of 2002 Outrigger Connections design team took up the task to design radical new OC-4 for surfing. The high graphite arch bracket was designed to raise the rear iako away from being hit by the wave.
The first testing was in October and more volume was requested for the hull.
In December the final testing took place in Makaha and in front of Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki. The MAKAHA OC-4 performed to the complete satisfaction and excitement of the test riders and the work on the mold started immediately.
First boat was out of the mold in the end of February of 2003 and MAKAHA OC-4 was first time introduced in March at the Buffalo Classics at Makaha. First three places finishers were in MAKAHA OC-4 and the success of the design continues in 2004 and 2005. The winner of the Buffalo Surfing Classics was the MAKAHA OC-4 by Outrigger Connection.

MIRAGE

A story of the OC-6 design development

Outrigger connection ‘s design team entered the OC market in 1997 with OC-6 design. The team of New Zealand won the Kona race and placed 3rd and in 1999 took second in the Molokai Hoe but the canoe didn’t become popular. In January of year 2000 the OC team decided to redesign the hull and followed the concept of America Cup yachts.
The hulls rocker is different that anything out there, it follows a smooth curve on the bow of the boat and the line straightens out towards the stern almost to the straight line. This concept allows the boat to stay horizontal in most oceans conditions and the surfing is made easy forward instead of sliding down on the wave.
Mirage performs excellent in the flat conditions. Several tests were done and Mirage always came in ahead of the leading brands of OC-6 canoes.

We always take care of the precisious protection agains any possible damage of our product during the delivery.

Giant Waves Before Start

Event: Womens Molokai Race 2012, Oahu. The competition length about 42 miles.
A Swell came a day before from North bringing massive waves reaching the highest level around 7AM next morning. Competitors had just been preparing their equipment for start.
Canoes left a bank from the HALE O LONO harbour passing the last embankment they got into huge 10m waves coming in about 3 minutes regular interval - always as a set of seven waves following by a short period of silence.(The OC canoes are about 14m long)
So, the success was very dependent on the precious timing. Who mistimed getting his canoe to the Ocean had got into the troubles easily.
At the end, about 10 canoes from 80 in total had crashed, a few of canoers had to be transported to the hospital.
That was our the most extreme Outrigger experience over last 25 years.

Legacy of Buffalo Keaulana

The Keaulana name is about a world-famous family in surfing, living at MAKAHA beach and collaborated on the MAKAHA design.
MAKAHA on this picture is a canoe of legendary Buffalo Keaulana sponsored by "Bud light" beer.
Some sons of Buffalo won the World Championships repeatedly in different surfing categories.
In February each year, the family organizes a popular surf contest on the MAKAHA beach welcoming many world-class surfers from the entire world!
